Elegant Moments Inspired by Date Masamune

Akiu Onsen, a renowned hot spring in Japan’s Tohoku region, holds a deep connection to the Date family and is often referred to as the hidden gem of Sendai. Kai Akiu is gracefully situated along the Natori River, a beautiful site celebrated since the ancient Heian period as one of Michinoku’s poetic landmarks. Surrounded by the rich natural beauty that changes with the seasons, the interior design seamlessly incorporates colors and lighting that resonate with the landscape, along with local traditional crafts including Sendai Glass.

The phrase “Date da ne” (pronounced: dah-teh dah neh), is an expression that conveys admiration, meaning, “that’s elegant,” “that’s stylish,” or, “that’s sophisticated”. This phrase was inspired by Date Masamune, a lord or “daimyo” of the Sendai domain, who was not only skilled in politics and martial arts, but was also well-versed in cultural activities such as tea ceremonies, Noh theater, and poetry. He became a symbol of the sophisticated and vibrant cultural figures of his time, giving the word “Date” its unique significance.

In our lighting design of Kai Akiu, we sought to create a sophisticated atmosphere with a subtle brightness, incorporating the iconic image of the moon, which is associated with Date Masamune, so that guests can enjoy such “Date-inspired” moments of elegance.

Wind chimes displayed in the approach. The “Matsukasa Wind Chimes” are said to have been created when the Sendai clan requested wind chimes with a pleasant sound.
Reception lounge. Shoji screens are strategically installed above the eyeline to direct guests’ gaze toward the scenery of the Natori River and valley. The reception area welcomes guests with light filtered through Shiroishi washi paper.

A special room themed around Date Masamune’s “crescent moon” motif is designed with soft lighting resembling moonlight.
