Breath of life

One of the Signature Pavilions of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan “LIVE EARTH JOURNEY” produced by Shoji Kawamori. The pavilion’s concept is “A miracle of living now and here together”. It gently yet powerfully expresses the beautiful brilliance of life and the connections between all life dwelling in the universe, the ocean, and on land.

The architectural concept is “Reef of Life”. Cubic structures, randomly stacked and referred to as “Cells”, create numerous gaps and spaces, evoking the image of a reef that fosters diverse forms of life.

In our lighting design of this pavilion, we breathed life through the light into each cell. The first layer above the ground is immersed in the deep blue of the ocean, while the upper layer glows in reddish-orange tones evoking the magnificent land. “Ocean Cells” weave a slow rhythm like waves, while each “Land Cell” glows as if repeating its own unique rhythm.

Just as countless tiny cells come together to form a single living organism, each light of “Cells” carries its own rhythm, yet together they resonate as the great heartbeat of a greater life. Through these expressions, we sought to create the pavilion embodying the beautiful light of life, as if the architecture itself were infused with life.

The symbol of LIVE EARTH JOURNEY , “INOCHI-DAMA”. Its reddish-orange light slowly resonates, as if echoing the heartbeat of a greater life.
Light of the Land | Inspired by fire, flame, magma, the heart, and blood — a rhythm evoking the heartbeat of life.
Light of the Ocean | Inspired by the sea, waves, and tides — a rhythm evoking the pulse of the moon and the ocean.
The Earth at the center is part of the exhibition. The light of the universe.
The seas come in many colors, and the lands in many shades. “Unity in Diversity” is also the guiding concept of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.
